Being Bar Manager at the Chase Park Plaza is how I got into HVAC Installation and Repair- Though both are positions of responsibility, there are definitive differences in the scope of the job. Lol…
1999 was a busy year for us. Events were booked back-to-back and then the end of the year’s New Year’s Eve Millennial Party… I felt like a one-eyed cat watching 3 mouse holes, lol. I may have been 20 years younger, 40 pounds lighter and hey, a little compliment can go a long way “lookin like Sinatra in that Suit” … But seriously, I wanted a day job! My most reliable of part time hires came to my rescue! It was early spring 2000 and the AC at my house quit working here comes Mike Olenjack. He worked for Welsch Heating and Cooling, stopping by on his way home he fixed my AC. “All it needed was an outdoor coil cleaning”. Told me important tips to keep it running efficiently. I expressed an interest in the trade and a few days later I received a call from the service manager to schedule me in for an interview! Some of my military experience transferred over and was hired. Contracted by local 36 Sheet Metal Workers, started 4-year apprenticeship with paid training and schooling. And I love it to this day… 2 parts troubleshooting and anticipating potential concerns, 3 parts sales recommending solutions to customers, and get to see the job through from start to finish. I love my work turning every service call and install into an effective solution!
1990 to 1993 U.S. Army- (119 Transportation Co- I was in the shipping business)
- (MOS) 88H, Cargo Specialist-Ensuring U.S. Military Forces receive supplies, weapons, and equipment from cargo ships docked at Port. - Most of the time I was operating material handling equipment (cranes and forklifts).
Gulf War (Desert Storm- Liberation and Defense of Kuwait)
- Dammam Seaport, Saudi Arabia
Operation Restore Hope- To provide, facilitate, and secure humanitarian relief in Somalia.
- Port of Mogadishu (Indian Ocean)
1993-Back in “The Lou”
- Helped friends grow their lawn care business
- Saint Louis Country Club- Tending bar and Banquet serving
Transition Assistance Program provided by the VA helped me land career job in San Diego, Ca! My girlfriend and I packed a U-Haul and moved to San Diego (See ya Saint Louis!).
1996 Hired at NASSCO- Constructing ships for the U.S. Government and commercial customers.
Ahh San Diego! The land of surf and sun and its laidback attitude… The multitude of hiking trails in Torrey Pines, gorgeous beaches, Gaslamp Square, San Diego Zoo, Black’s Beach full moon parties, Cinco De Mayo in Tijuana… We did it all- Literally, until a doctor visit confirmed “She’s Having A Baby!”
She was 22, I was 28 when we moved back to Saint Louis and Devin was born! Ill always remember his first breath. He let out a GASP as his central nervous system reacted to the change in temperature and environment. Grabbing onto my index fingers with those tiny hands as if he felt a jolt of energy and recognized my voice… Daddies Here! Five years later Collin was born, and I cut the cord… After the big move back to St. Louis, being new parents, juggling work with young kids at home, we were not the happy couple we once were… After the break-up we did well, co-parenting. As long as we didn’t talk to each other… Both our families that wanted us back in town with the kids, pitched in immensely!
